My series, Until the Last Breath, won first place in the ‘Portrait Series’ category at the 43rd Hungarian Press Photo Competition.
It was also honored with the prestigious André Kertész Grand Prize, which is awarded for the best human-centred documentary work.
The series captures the profound connection between Ákos Márkovics and Dániel Karsai, and Karsai’s fight for the right to make end-of-life decisions — a battle that sparked a public debate on euthanasia in Hungary.
The jury comprised international professionals including Tamás Szlukovényi (Archive of Modern Conflict, Canada), Adrian Evans (Panos Pictures, UK), Petr Mlch (Czech News Agency, Czech Republic), Radu Sigheti (Reuters, Romania) and Klára Szarka (curator and photo historian, Hungary).
Thank you to Ákos Márkovics for joining me at the awards ceremony and to Eszter Gordon for capturing the moment!
